Located just south of Downtown, the museum is the only Latino museum in the state. It helps preserve the history of the Latino art experience in America by offering Spanish Colonial works as well as many contemporary pieces of varying mediums. Founded in 1991 as a nonprofit museum, it is committed to preserving, presenting, and promoting the art and culture of the Latino people through innovative exhibitions and collections, bilingual programs, educational activities and special events.
The mission of the Museum is to foster understanding of and appreciation for the achievements of the Latino people of the Americas by collecting, preserving, and interpreting the diverse art, history, and cultures of this region from ancient times to the present.
The treasures that can be found in the museum's permanent collection include 'Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno (Our Father Jesus the Nazarene),' a polychrome wood statue made in Mexico in the late 1800s, and 'Santa Nino de Atocha,' oil on tin that also dates to the late 1800s. Permanent and continuing exhibitions usually focus on paintings and sculptures created in the Spanish colonies of the New World, ancient art of the Americas, and the evolution of Latino art and culture.
