The 19th of June (Juneteenth) originated in the state of Texas, serving as a memorial to freedom from slavery, after the Civil War period when General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston Texas and read the act of Emancipating Proclamation which President Abraham Lincoln had signed in September of 1862. Juneteenth stands for June 19, the day slavery ended in Texas.

The Juneteenth festival, celebrated in communities throughout the state of Michigan and in other parts of the country and in the United States, is much more than a simple celebration having a positive impact on the Holland community and African American youth in previous years, consisting all the elements of traditional festival which showcases food booths, arts and crafts tables, games and rides, baseball tournament, a large parade to commence the activities, and a Sunday gospel fest with preachers from the Denver community.

The selection of Miss Juneteenth Queen and educational classes of African history and language gives African American female student opportunities to get connected with their community through volunteer opportunities and public.
