The Colorado Railroad Museum was established in 1959 and is recognized as one of the best privately supported rail museums in the United States famed to preserve for future generations a tangible record of Colorado's flamboyant railroad era, particularly the state's pioneering narrow gauge mountain railroads.

This "can't miss" site for railfans features approximately 15 acres of grounds which contain the buildings, locomotives, and rolling stock that houses the largest known collection of historic records, mementos, artifacts, and pictures of Colorado railroads. There are also exhibits on the Fred Harvey restaurants, lanterns, smaller railroads in Colorado, dining car china, and model trains. The museum also houses the famed D&RG locomotive, the oldest working locomotive in Colorado.

The Museum Gift Store and shop carries railfan magazines, railroad videos , T- shirts, home accessories, jewelry, train song CDs, railroad prints, railroad pasta, and "Thomas the Tank Engine" toys.
